GENERAL<\/span> APPEARANCE<\/span><\/strong> : The Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Cock\u00ader Spaniel is the <\/span>small\u00adest mem\u00adber of the Sport\u00ading Group. He has a stur\u00addy, com\u00adpact <\/span>body and a clean\u00adly chis\u00adelled and refined head, with the over\u00adall dog in <\/span>com\u00adplete bal\u00adance and of ide\u00adal size. He stands well up at the shoul\u00adder <\/span>on straight forelegs with a topline slop\u00ading slight\u00adly toward strong, <\/span>mod\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly bent, mus\u00adcu\u00adlar quar\u00adters. He is a dog capa\u00adble of <\/span>con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable speed, com\u00adbined with great endurance. Above all, he <\/span>must be free and mer\u00adry, sound, well bal\u00adanced through\u00adout and in <\/span>action show a keen incli\u00adna\u00adtion to work. A dog well bal\u00adanced in all <\/span>parts is more desir\u00adable than a dog with strong\u00adly con\u00adtrast\u00ading good <\/span>points and faults.<\/span><\/p>

IMPORTANT<\/span> PROPORTIONS<\/span> : The mea\u00adsure\u00adment from the <\/span>breast bone to back of thigh is slight\u00adly longer than the mea\u00adsure\u00adment <\/span>from the high\u00adest point of with\u00aders to the ground. The body must be of <\/span>suf\u00adfi\u00adcient length to per\u00admit a straight and free stride; the dog nev\u00ader <\/span>appears long and low.<\/span><\/p>

BEHAVIOUR<\/span> \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/span><\/strong> : Equable in tem\u00adpera\u00adment with <\/span>no sug\u00adges\u00adtion of timidity.<\/span><\/p>

HEAD<\/span><\/strong> : To attain a well pro\u00adpor\u00adtioned head, which must be in <\/span>bal\u00adance with the rest of the dog, it embod\u00adies an intel\u00adli\u00adgent, alert, soft <\/span>and appeal\u00ading expression.<\/span><\/p>

CRANIAL<\/span> REGION<\/span> :
<\/span><\/strong>Skull :<\/span> Round\u00aded but not exag\u00adger\u00adat\u00aded with no ten\u00adden\u00adcy toward <\/span>flat\u00adness; the eye\u00adbrows are clear\u00adly defined. The bony struc\u00adture <\/span>beneath the eyes is well chis\u00adelled.
<\/span>Stop :<\/span> Pronounced.<\/span><\/p>

FACIAL<\/span> REGION<\/span> :
<\/span><\/strong>Nose :<\/span> Of suf\u00adfi\u00adcient size to bal\u00adance the muz\u00adzle and foreface, with <\/span>well devel\u00adoped nos\u00adtrils typ\u00adi\u00adcal of a sport\u00ading dog. It is black in colour <\/span>in the blacks, black and tans and black and whites; in oth\u00ader colours it <\/span>may be brown, liv\u00ader or black, the dark\u00ader the bet\u00adter. The colour of the <\/span>nose har\u00admo\u00adnizes with the colour of the eye rim.
<\/span>Muz\u00adzle :<\/span> Broad and deep. To be in cor\u00adrect bal\u00adance, the dis\u00adtance <\/span>from the stop to the tip of nose is one half the dis\u00adtance from the stop <\/span>up over the crown to the base of the skull.
<\/span>Lips :<\/span> The upper lip is full and of suf\u00adfi\u00adcient depth to cov\u00ader the low\u00ader <\/span>jaw.
<\/span>Jaws\/Teeth :<\/span> Jaws square and even. Teeth strong and sound, not too <\/span>small and meet in a scis\u00adsor bite.<\/span>
<\/span>Cheeks :<\/span> Not promi\u00adnent.
<\/span>Eyes :<\/span> Eye\u00adballs are round and full and look direct\u00adly for\u00adward. The <\/span>shape of the eye rims gives a slight\u00adly almond-shaped appear\u00adance; the <\/span>eye is not weak or gog\u00adgled. The colour of the iris is dark brown and <\/span>in gen\u00ader\u00adal the dark\u00ader the bet\u00adter.
<\/span>Ears :<\/span> Lob\u00adu\u00adlar, long, of fine leather, well feath\u00adered, and placed no <\/span>high\u00ader than a line to the low\u00ader part of the eye.<\/span><\/p>

NECK<\/span><\/strong> : The neck is suf\u00adfi\u00adcient\u00adly long to allow the nose to reach the <\/span>ground eas\u00adi\u00adly, mus\u00adcu\u00adlar and free from pen\u00addu\u00adlous \u00ab throat\u00adi\u00adness \u00bb. It <\/span>ris\u00ades strong\u00adly from the shoul\u00adders and arch\u00ades slight\u00adly as it tapers to<\/span>join the head.<\/span><\/p>

BODY<\/span> :
<\/span><\/strong>Topline :<\/span> Slop\u00ading slight\u00adly toward mus\u00adcu\u00adlar quar\u00adters.
<\/span>Back :<\/span> Strong and slop\u00ading even\u00adly and slight\u00adly down\u00adward from the <\/span>shoul\u00adders to the set-on of the docked tail.
<\/span>Chest :<\/span> Deep, its low\u00adest point no high\u00ader than the elbows, its front <\/span>suf\u00adfi\u00adcient\u00adly wide for ade\u00adquate heart and lung space, yet not so wide <\/span>as to inter\u00adfere with the straight for\u00adward move\u00adment of the forelegs.<\/span>Ribs are deep and well sprung.<\/span><\/p>

TAIL<\/span><\/strong> : The docked tail is set on and car\u00adried on a line with the <\/span>topline of the back, or slight\u00adly high\u00ader; nev\u00ader straight up like a ter\u00adri\u00ader<\/span>and nev\u00ader so low as to indi\u00adcate timid\u00adi\u00adty. When the dog is in motion <\/span>the tail action is merry.<\/span><\/p>

LIMBS<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

FOREQUARTERS<\/span> :
<\/span>Gen\u00ader\u00adal appear\u00adance :<\/span> Forelegs are par\u00adal\u00adlel, straight, strong\u00adly boned, <\/span>mus\u00adcu\u00adlar and set close to the body well under the scapu\u00adlae.
<\/span>Shoul\u00adders :<\/span> Well laid back form\u00ading an angle with the upper arm of <\/span>approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 90\u00b0 which per\u00admits the dog to move his forelegs in an <\/span>easy man\u00adner with for\u00adward reach. Shoul\u00adders are clean-cut and <\/span>slop\u00ading with\u00adout pro\u00adtru\u00adsion and so set that the upper points of the <\/span>with\u00aders are at an angle which per\u00admits a wide spring of rib.
<\/span>Elbows :<\/span> When viewed from the side with the forelegs ver\u00adti\u00adcal, the <\/span>elbow is direct\u00adly below the high\u00adest point of the shoul\u00adder blade.
<\/span>Pasterns :<\/span> Short and strong. Dew\u00adclaws on forelegs may be removed.<\/span><\/p>

HINDQUARTERS<\/span> :
<\/span>Gen\u00ader\u00adal appear\u00adance :<\/span> When viewed from behind, the hind legs are <\/span>par\u00adal\u00adlel when in motion and at rest. They are strong\u00adly boned and <\/span>mus\u00adcled.
<\/span>Hips :<\/span> Wide and quar\u00adters well round\u00aded and mus\u00adcu\u00adlar.
<\/span>Upper thighs :<\/span> Pow\u00ader\u00adful and clear\u00adly defined.
<\/span>Sti\u00adfle :<\/span> Mod\u00ader\u00adate angu\u00adla\u00adtion of the sti\u00adfle. Strong and there is no <\/span>slip\u00adpage of it in motion or when stand\u00ading.
<\/span>Hocks :<\/span> Strong and well let down. Dew\u00adclaws on hind legs may be <\/span>removed.<\/span><\/p>

FEET<\/span><\/strong> : Com\u00adpact, large, round and firm with horny pads; they turn <\/span>nei\u00adther in nor out.<\/span><\/p>

GAIT<\/span> \/ MOVEMENT<\/span> : The Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Cock\u00ader Spaniel, though the <\/span>small\u00adest of the sport\u00ading dogs, pos\u00adsess\u00ades a typ\u00adi\u00adcal sport\u00ading dog gait. <\/span>Pre\u00adreq\u00adui\u00adsite to good move\u00adment is bal\u00adance between the front and the <\/span>rear assem\u00adblies. He dri\u00adves with strong, pow\u00ader\u00adful rear quar\u00adters and is <\/span>prop\u00ader\u00adly con\u00adstruct\u00aded in the shoul\u00adders and forelegs so that he can <\/span>reach for\u00adward with\u00adout con\u00adstric\u00adtion in a full stride to coun\u00adter\u00adbal\u00adance <\/span>the dri\u00adving force from the rear. Above all, his gait is co\u00f6r\u00addi\u00adnat\u00aded, <\/span>smooth and effort\u00adless. The dog must cov\u00ader ground with his action; <\/span>exces\u00adsive ani\u00adma\u00adtion should not be mis\u00adtak\u00aden for prop\u00ader gait.<\/span><\/p>

COAT<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

HAIR<\/span><\/strong> : On the head, short and fine; on body, medi\u00adum length, with <\/span>enough under\u00adcoat\u00ading to give pro\u00adtec\u00adtion. The ears, chest, abdomen <\/span>and legs are well feath\u00adered, but not so exces\u00adsive\u00adly as to hide the <\/span>Cock\u00ader Spaniel\u2019s true lines and move\u00adment or affect his appear\u00adance <\/span>and func\u00adtion as a mod\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly coat\u00aded sport\u00ading dog. The tex\u00adture is <\/span>most impor\u00adtant. The coat is silky, flat or slight\u00adly wavy and of a <\/span>tex\u00adture which per\u00admits easy care. Exces\u00adsive coat or curly or cot\u00adtony <\/span>tex\u00adtured coat shall be severe\u00adly penal\u00adized. Use of elec\u00adtric clip\u00adpers on <\/span>the back coat is not desir\u00adable. Trim\u00adming to enhance the dog\u2019s true <\/span>lines should be done to appear as nat\u00adur\u00adal as possible.<\/span><\/p>

COLOUR<\/span> AND<\/span> MARKINGS<\/span><\/strong> :
<\/span>\u00b7 Black vari\u00adety :<\/strong> Sol\u00adid colour black, to include black with tan <\/span>points. The black should be jet; shad\u00adings of brown or liv\u00ader in the <\/span>coat are not desir\u00adable. A small amount of white on the chest <\/span>and\/or throat is allowed; white in any oth\u00ader loca\u00adtion shall <\/span>dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfy.<\/span><\/p>

\u00b7 Any Sol\u00adid Colour Oth\u00ader Than Black (ASCOB<\/span>) :<\/strong> Any sol\u00adid colour <\/span>oth\u00ader than black, rang\u00ading from the light\u00adest cream to dark\u00adest red, <\/span>includ\u00ading brown and brown with tan points. The colour shall be <\/span>of a uni\u00adform shade, but lighter colour of the feath\u00ader\u00ading is <\/span>per\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adble. A small amount of white on the chest and\/or throat <\/span>is allowed; white in any oth\u00ader loca\u00adtion shall disqualify.<\/span><\/p>

\u00b7 Par\u00adti-Colour vari\u00adety :<\/strong> Two or more sol\u00adid, well bro\u00adken colours, <\/span>one of which must be white; black and white, red and white (the <\/span>red may range from light\u00adest cream to dark\u00adest red), brown and <\/span>white, and roans, to include any such colour com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion with tan <\/span>points. It is prefer\u00adable that the tan mark\u00adings be locat\u00aded in the <\/span>same pat\u00adtern as for the tan points in the Black and ASCOB<\/span> <\/span>vari\u00adeties. Roans are clas\u00adsi\u00adfied as Par\u00adti-Colours and may be of any <\/span>of the usu\u00adal roan\u00ading pat\u00adterns. Pri\u00adma\u00adry colour which is nine\u00adty <\/span>per\u00adcent (90%) or more shall disqualify.<\/span><\/p>

\u00b7 Tan points :<\/strong> The colour of the tan may be from the light\u00adest cream <\/span>to the dark\u00adest red and is restrict\u00aded to ten per\u00adcent (10%) or less of <\/span>the colour of the spec\u00adi\u00admen; tan mark\u00adings in excess of that amount <\/span>shall dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfy. In the case of tan points in the Black or ASCOB<\/span> <\/span>vari\u00adety, the mark\u00adings shall be locat\u00aded as fol\u00adlows :
<\/span>1) A clear tan spot over each eye;
<\/span>2) On the sides of the muz\u00adzle and on the cheeks;
<\/span>3) On the under\u00adside of the ears;
<\/span>4) On all feet and\/or legs;
<\/span>5) Under the tail;
<\/span>6) On the chest, option\u00adal : pres\u00adence or absence <\/span>shall not be penal\u00adized.
<\/span>Tan mark\u00adings which are not read\u00adi\u00adly vis\u00adi\u00adble or which amount only to <\/span>traces, shall be penal\u00adized. Tan on the muz\u00adzle which extends upward, <\/span>over and joins shall also be penal\u00adized. The absence of tan mark\u00adings <\/span>in the Black or ASCOB<\/span> vari\u00adety in any of the spec\u00adi\u00adfied loca\u00adtions in <\/span>any oth\u00ader\u00adwise tan-point\u00aded dog shall disqualify.<\/span><\/p>

SIZE<\/span> :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The ide\u00adal height at the with\u00aders for an adult dog is 15 inch\u00ades and for <\/span>an adult bitch, 14 inch\u00ades. Height may vary one half inch above or <\/span>below this ide\u00adal. A dog whose height exceeds 15 1<\/sup>\u20442<\/sub> inch\u00ades or a <\/span>bitch whose height exceeds 14 1<\/sup>\u20442<\/sub> inch\u00ades shall be dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfied. An <\/span>adult dog whose height is less than 14 1<\/sup>\u20442<\/sub> inch\u00ades and an adult bitch <\/span>whose height is less than 13 1<\/sup>\u20442<\/sub> inch\u00ades shall be penal\u00adized. Height is <\/span>deter\u00admined by a line per\u00adpen\u00addic\u00adu\u00adlar to the ground from the top of the <\/span>shoul\u00adder blades, the dog stand\u00ading nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly with its forelegs and <\/span>low\u00ader hind legs par\u00adal\u00adlel to the line of measurement.<\/span><\/p>

FAULTS<\/span> :<\/strong> Any depar\u00adture from the fore\u00adgo\u00ading points should be <\/span>con\u00adsid\u00adered a fault and the seri\u00adous\u00adness with which the fault should be <\/span>regard\u00aded should be in exact pro\u00adpor\u00adtion to its degree and its effect <\/span>upon the health and wel\u00adfare of the dog.<\/span><\/p>

DISQUALIFYING<\/span> FAULTS<\/span> :
<\/span><\/strong>\u00b7 Aggre\u00adsive or over\u00adly shy.
<\/span>\u00b7 Any dog clear\u00adly show\u00ading phys\u00adi\u00adcal or behav\u00adiour\u00adal abnor\u00admal\u00adi\u00adties <\/span>shall be dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfied.
<\/span>\u00b7 Colour and mark\u00adings : The afore\u00admen\u00adtioned colours are the only <\/span>accept\u00adable colours or com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of colours. Any oth\u00ader colours <\/span>or com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of colours to dis\u00adqual\u00adi\u00adfy.
